Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will continue to be deposited on wind sheltered North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Avalanches are likely in these locations, particularly early morning as the temperature rises and the snowfall is at it\'s heaviest. Cornices above these aspects will be prone to collapse. Windward aspects will tend to be scoured and stability better. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will briefly rise to about 1200 metres during the morning before falling back down to around 500 metres by late afternoon. Gale force winds will be from the South-West or West. A band of snow, turning briefly to rain below about 1000 metres, will cross the area during the morning. This will be followed by snow showers. Observed Weather Influences: There were heavy snow showers overnight and through the day. The freezing level was around 600 metres. Gale force winds were from the West. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of unstable windslab have been deposited in wind sheltered locations on mainly North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Fresh cornices above these aspects are unstable. Evidence of recent avalanche activity was noted on an Easterly aspect at around 1000 metres. Windward aspects tend to be scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
