Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

The more deeply embedded layers inside the snow cover are encrusted below approximately 2400 to 2600 m. The near-surface layers of snow frequently show severe effects of wind impact. Fresh fallen snow and freshly generated snowdrift accumulations are often quite well consolidated. Significant weak layers have not yet been uncovered. As a consequence of the strikingly higher temperatures and the rainfall, the layers of the snowpack nearest to the surface are becoming moist up to high altitudes.

Weather forecast through Sunday, 19.11.2023

To start with on Saturday night, a small amount of precipitation is anticipated in the northern regions. Subsequently, skies will clear up in some places. In early morning on Sunday, a new round of light precipitation is expected to set in from the north. In the southern regions is will be predominantly sunny.

Fresh snow

The snowfall level during the nighttime hours will lie at approximately 2600 m, in the eastern regions at still lower altitudes. During the daytime hours the snowfall level will descend to approximately 2200 m. Between Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon, the following amounts of fresh snow are expected above 2800 m:

  • from the Aletsch region into the Susten region: 15 to 30 cm;
  • in the remaining sectors of the northern flank of the Alps, in the northern part of Prättigau, in the Silvretta and in the Samnaun: 5 to 15 cm;
  • further towards the south, less; on the southern flank of the Alps it is expected to remain dry.

Temperature

Temperatures are expected to drop. At midday at 2000 m to between +5 °C in the western and the southern regions, and +3 °C in the northern and the eastern regions.

Wind

Winds will be blowing from westerly directions, in the mountains predominantly at strong to storm velocity.

Observed weather review Saturday, 18.11.2023

Following the termination of this period of precipitation, nocturnal skies turned intermittently clear. Subsequently, skies again became overcast, initially in the western regions during the morninig hours, later on in the eastern regions as well. Around midday, a new bout of light precipitation set in from the west. In the southern regions it remained predominantly sunny.

Fresh snow

The snowfall level on Friday evening lay at 1000 m, on Saturday at midday at approximately 2400 m. There were only a few centimetres of fresh fallen snow registered.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between +4 °C in the western regions and -3 °C in the eastern regions.

Wind

Winds were blowing predominantly at moderate strength, at elevated altitudes blowing intermittently also at strong velocity, from westerly directions.

Outlook through Tuesday, 21.11.2023Monday

In the northern regions skies are expected to be heavily overcast for the most part, accompanied by bright intervals which can persist for longer periods in the inneralpine regions. On the southern flank of the Alps it will be predominantly sunny. Winds will be westerly, blowing predominantly at strong to storm velocity at heightened altitudes in particular. Avalanche danger levels are expected to decrease.

Tuesday

On Monday night in the northern regions, precipitation is expected to set in. On the northern flank of the Alps the precipitation will be persistent at least for a time, elsewhere the precipitation will be shower-like. The snowfall level will lie at approximately 1000 m. In the southern regions, skies will be variably cloudy and it is expected to remain dry. Winds will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity from northerly to northwesterly directions. Avalanche danger is expected to increase at heightened altitudes on the northern flank of the Alps more than anywhere else.
