The avalanche danger today above 8,500' remains Moderate due to the unlikely potential of triggering a very large, hard slab avalanche. A weak layer of faceted snow deep in the snowpack is slowly becoming dormant however the potential to trigger this weak layer remains a risk. Probe for this weak layer and carefully evaluate steep, unsupported slopes. Triggering one of these weak spots is becoming more unlikely but doing so continues to carry very high consequences. Travel one at a time and choose your terrain carefully. At the lower elevations, avalanches are unlikely and would be small in size and limited to steep, isolated terrain features.

    Weak layers of sugary facets are now buried 1 to 5 feet below the snow’s surface. Large or multiple triggers, or crossing a thin spot in the slab may still release a very large and destructive avalanche. Although the chance of triggering an avalanche on this weak layer has become very unlikely, it is NOT impossible. Steep, unsupported slopes on northerly aspects are the most likely locations to find a trigger point. Slopes may feel stable but the significant avalanche cycle involving very large slabs occurred on these weak layers just over a week ago.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )High pressure conditions continue overnight. Temperatures will drop to around zero under clear skies in the valley bottoms with teens at higher elevations. Clouds will begin to build tomorrow afternoon in advance of a weak system which will bring little relief from the drought. Expect temperatures once again in the twenties tomorrow with light westerly winds.The slab overlying the basal weak layers have gained a lot of strength over the past week making it very unlikely to trigger this weak layer. The lack of recent avalanches is encouraging but the weak layers remain a concern that is best managed by practicing good travel techniques in steep terrain. Hard slabs can propagate cracks a long distance so triggering a thin spot could potentially create a thick slab avalanche, most likely from steep, unsupported and rocky terrain. The danger rating at upper elevations around 9,000’ or so will remain Moderate due to the unlikely potential of triggering one of these slabs.
