Kernpunkte

I'm expecting a lot of "Baby Avalanche Problems" on Sunday.  We have some very weak snow at the surface now, and the new snow will be sitting on that.  With only 2 inches of new snow in the forecast I'm not sure these instabilities are deep enough to be considered avalanche problems.  The exception is in wind loaded terrain where the new snow blows in deeper.

The forecast is for relatively light winds, but any blowing snow could be accumulating on very weak surface snow.  Wind Slabs may propogate farther than usual because of this.  Assess the depth of wind deposited snow before committing to lee slopes.  The winds have swung from North back to West in the past day, so some unusual slopes have seen wind loading.

Avalanche Discussion

Any snow that falls during the day tomorrow will be falling on a variety of surfaces.  In sheltered areas there is a lot of very weak snow including surface hoar and near surface facets.  In isolated pockets on North slopes you might also find faceted grains around the uppermost crusts.  The rain crust is quite stout and supportable.
