Yesterday’s cold front brought strong winds and up to six inches of new snow to the mountains, and recently formed wind slabs increased in size. On a variety of aspects above 8,000 feet, skiers and riders could easily trigger these large to very large slabs in steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain, and natural activity cannot be ruled out. Some potential remains for these slabs to step down to persistent weak layers of faceted snow near the base of the snowpack. Similar, smaller wind slabs could be triggered below 8,000 feet on steep, leeward slopes. Don’t let blue skies and powder impair your judgement; great skiing and riding can easily be found in low consequence terrain. If you choose to travel in avalanche terrain, expert snowpack and terrain evaluation skills will be required.

    Strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds during yesterday’s frontal passage easily transported new and existing snow, and wind slabs that formed earlier in the week gained depth and volume. These slabs reside above crusts, wind pack and dense, settled snow. Failure could occur on these old snow surfaces or on density changes within the recent abundant snowfall. Above 8,000 feet, backcountry travelers are likely to trigger these slabs to depths of one to four feet in steep, wind loaded terrain. Below 8,000 feet, these slabs could be triggered with depths up to 18 inches. As the day warms, these slabs may become more susceptible to failure on sunlit aspects.

    Up to two and a half inches of snow water equivalent has recently been added to basal layers of faceted snow that formed early in the season. Skiers and riders may still be able to impact these deeply buried weak layers. These slabs could also step down from the release of a wind slab. With depths ranging from three to six feet, involvement in one of these destructive avalanches could easily result in a fatality.

Overnight lows in the mountains will be near zero before rising into the mid-teens in the afternoon. Ridgetop winds will veer to the north at 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Considerable above 7,500 feet on Sunday. In steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain, skiers and riders could easily trigger wind slabs with depths ranging from two to five feet. These slabs might still be able to release naturally. Below 7,500 feet, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate. There, backcountry travelers could trigger similar wind slabs with depths up to two feet. Some potential may remain for these slabs to step down to persistent weak layers of faceted snow near the base of the snowpack. These very large, destructive avalanches are more likely to occur in the Southwest Trails and Togwotee Pass forecast zones where the snowpack is on the shallower end of the spectrum. In these two areas, backcountry travelers might still be able to trigger these persistent deep slabs directly. Don’t let blue skies and powder impair your judgement; great skiing and riding can easily be found in low consequence terrain. If you choose to travel in avalanche terrain, expert snowpack and terrain evaluation skills will be required.
