At the mid and upper elevations deep persistent slabs continue to pose a serious threat to backcountry travelers. The consequences of triggering one of these slabs is likely to be severe. This hazard is best managed by making conservative terrain choices. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.

    Deep hard slabs that lie upon a persistent weak layer of faceted snow are most likely to be triggered by larger loads such as a snowmobile or group of skiers but still could be triggered by the weight of a single person. These slabs could be triggered on a variety of aspects with depths from two to five feet. Shallow areas of the slab are the most likely trigger points. Previous tracks are not an indication of stability.

Avalanche Discussion

Periods of light snowfall or flurries will continue. Additional new snow accumulations of one to two inches are likely by Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the teens and 20s. Winds will be light from the southwest at 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE at the mid and upper elevations. Humans who venture into steep terrain could trigger dangerous hard slabs up to five feet in deep. Conservative terrain choices are warranted. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 7,500 where the general avalanche hazard is LOW.
