At the mid and upper elevations pockets of wind slab could be triggered by backcountry skiers and riders on a variety of aspects. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully and avoid features of concern. The snowpack is mostly stable and avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.

    Northeast winds have created fresh pockets of dense wind slab amid pockets of older wind slab formed by southwest to northwest winds. These soft and hard slabs lie upon crusts and areas of buried surface hoar. In steep terrain at the mid and upper elevations these slabs could be human triggered on a variety of aspects with depths to two feet. Sunshine and rising temperatures may increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers.

Avalanche Discussion

A cold front will drop southward into central Wyoming overnight and bring some clouds and a chance of snow showers to Togwotee Pass and areas along the east slope of the Continental Divide. Temperatures will drop into the teens overnight and rise into the 30s on Thursday. Winds will be light from the north at 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to MODERATE at the upper elevations. Pockets of wind slab one to two feet in depth could be human triggered in steep terrain and cliff areas. Mostly stable snow exists at the lower elevations where the general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW.
