Avalanche Activity

CM for 24.12 Thaw conditions. Initial wet snow instabilities steep NE,E,SE,S aspts abv. 850m. Extensive snow loss! Avalanche Low Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: Isolated wet snow instabilities will be present early in the period. Steep areas will be particularly affected, especially those of a North-East through East to South aspect above 850 metres, such as coire rims and headwalls. A trend of slow consolidation will then occur combined with extensive snow loss at all elevations. Remaining cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Much milder conditions. The freezing level will be between 2500 and 3000 metres. Rain will fall at all levels during the period, with the greatest intensity expected in the morning. Winds will generally be South-Westerly, very strong to gale force. Observed Weather Influences: A few residual snow showers died out at dawn to give a generally dry day. Winds were predominately from the North-West. The freezing level was around 700 metres at midday. ObservedSnowStability: Recently formed windslab is present on steep North-East through East to South aspects above 850 metres. Most affected are steep wind sheltered aspects such as coire back walls and gullies. Some gullies and steep banks are subject to localised cross-loading adjacent to heavily scoured areas. Windward aspects are scoured and stable. Cornices were noted, particularly above East to South aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
