Kernpunkte

Stormy weather will cause a steady increase in avalanche danger, that will be proportional to how much new snow has fallen.  Avalanche danger will be minimal on Wednesday morning.  By evening Wind Slab avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider will be possible on north and east slopes near treeline and in the alpine.  Similarly, Storm Slab avalanches will be possible toward the end of the day although by definition they won't exceed the depth of the new snow.  The Moderate danger rating reflects the avalanche danger during the bulk of the day although the danger rating could reach into Considerable by evening (and the Low rating below treeline could reach Moderate).

    Wind Slab avalanches will become more likely and larger as the day progresses.  Some key things to keep in mind:  the depth of wind deposited snow can be 3-5 times the depth of snow that has fallen from the sky; the forecast is for snowfall to begin with Light winds, before wind speeds, snowfall and temperature increase midday (this is a good setup for Wind Slab avalanches).  Since Wind Slabs are building throughout the day, observe snowfall and blowing snow.  Visible cracking and easy hand shear results on lee slopes are the easy signs of a Wind Slab avalanche problem (lee slopes are those that face away from the wind and receive wind transported snow).

    Storm Slab avalanches should not be a problem until late in the day once 8 inches or so of snow has piled up.  Even then, Storm Slabs will be shallow enough that they are unlikely to injure or bury a rider except where terrain traps are present.  I've included this avalanche problem because rising temperatures during the day could lead to "upside down" storm snow.  Watching for Storm Slab activity late in the day may also be valuable as we look ahead to Thursday when the snow will be deeper.  Storm Slabs are best identified by skinning or ski cutting across small steep test slopes.
