  Last night, Snotels 9,000 ft and above showed the temperature had dipped below the freezing mark for only a few hours.  With a minimal refreeze, and even warmer daytime temperatures today, you can expect to find a thin surface crust that quickly transition to unstable wet snow.  South facing terrain will be the first aspect to warm up, but the April sun angle is high in the sky much of our terrain is experiencing the effects of these long spring days. If you find yourself in deep slushy snow or see roller balls, it is time to find a slope with colder snow. Sheltered terrain in the trees or higher elevation slopes have generally been staying colder. 

  Exposed rocks or cliff bands can quickly absorb heat and effect the surrounding snowpack. Be mindful when traveling near or below cliff bands as a few roller balls can become a sizable Wet loose avalanche in certain terrain features. Consequences of small avalanches can  be amplified near gullies, cliffs, and other terrain traps. Use terrain and timing wisely today to navigate any avalanche  concerns.
