Kernpunkte

It remains possible to trigger a large avalanche two to three feet thick on buried weak layers of snow. Good riding still exists in shaded, more northerly aspects on slopes less than 30 degrees. Steep slopes over 30 degrees on shadier, more northerly aspects carry a greater avalanche risk.

    Sugary and weak layers of snow near the ground collapsed and avalanched ten days ago. The same weak layer exists now but is more difficult to trigger now. The slab sitting on top of the faceted snow is most likely to crack and fail on steeper slopes (30-45 degrees) and where the slab is thin enough for you weight to break the slab. Treeless, rocky slopes, rollovers, and  super steep creek banks are spots you are most likely to run into trouble.

    Front Range, SW of Sheep Pass: 10,000' SE aspect. Large avalanche that occured likely occured during our last storm cycle. Snowmobile tracks are present so hard saying whether it was remotely triggered or natural.

Avalanche Discussion

Lower elevation riding remains risky with rocks and stumps lurking just below the surface. The snowpack in the Salt and Snake River Ranges is much deeper above 8,500' than other areas in the Greys forecast zone. The thicker snowpack also happens to be where the greatest risk of avalanche exists. Old snow rotted during the cold, clear nights of November and remains preserved three and in some wind loaded areas, four or more feet down. Slabs there will be stubborn but could break far and wide. Warming temperatures may increase the chance of that happening over the next few days.

The Wyoming and Gros Ventre ranges have a much shallower snowpack currently and did in November as well. Those areas have less of the thick weak layer and a thinner slab sitting on top though few observations exist to confirm the extent of avalanche problem. If you venture out in those areas, be sure to dig or trench with your track to look for the weak layer to help steer clear of trouble.
