Generally safe avalanche conditions exist across the forecast zone today. High wind speeds will keep snow surfaces firm. Pockets of wet and unstable snow may still be present at lower elevations near rock bands or trees.  If you travel in the alpine use caution while in steep terrain where a simple loss of balance could result in a long sliding fall.

    Small pockets of Wet Loose instability may be present in the near/below treeline terrain, Warmer air temperatures and decreased wind speed will have less of a cooling effect on the snow surface than terrain at higher elevations.  An avalanche may not be big enough to bury a person but will be able to knock a skier or rider off their intended courses. Be mindful of consequential terrain below you such as trees, rocks, cliffs, or creek bottoms. All of these function as a terrain trap and amplify the consequences of avalanches. Watch for roller balls and deep boots/ski pen which will indicate surface instability due to warming may be present.

Avalanche Discussion

The Leavitt Lake SNOTEL(9,600ft) has recorded high temperatures in the high 30s to mid-40s ( F) every day for the last week. At night the temperatures have dropped below freezing creating firm surface conditions the next morning. The pattern will continue today but the added ingredient of strong SW winds will keep slopes cool and reduce any daytime warming that may affect the snow surface. Yesterday's observation saw minimal signs of warming during the warmest hours of the day due to a light SW breeze.  With ridgeline wind speeds forecasted to be in the 30s, increasing to 40 mph and some models showing wind gusts reaching 80+ this evening surface warming will be held at bay. 

Below treeline terrain will see temperatures near 50F and less intense wind speeds at 25 MPH with gusts up to 55 MPH in the afternoon.  Be mindful when traveling below the tree line that there is still a chance to find pockets of loose wet snow that may be big enough to knock you off your intended route. Watch for terrain traps or other hazards such as rocks or trees that could increase the consequences of a small avalanche. Watch for signs of surface instability due to warming such as roller balls and deep ski/ boot pen 

Evidence of cornice failures was seen in Leavitt Lake Cirque, with cooler temps and high winds at ridgetops the threat has decreased but travelers should still be aware of the potential cornice failures after a week of warm temperatures compromising their integrity.

With firm conditions expected in the alpine environment, it is always a good idea to bring your sharps kit if you're traveling in the backcountry. Crampons, ski crampons, whippets, and ice axes are all tools needed to mitigate a long sliding fall if you lose your footing on a steep and firm slope.

Conditions will change this weekend with the arrival of a winter storm. New snow will be most intense Friday night into Saturday but flurries will remain in the forecast until Sunday. Weather models show 20" accumulating on Sonora Pass by Sunday evening
