As last weekend's heavy snowfall becomes more distant, we will see a decrease in avalanche danger.  I don't want folks to oversimplify a step down in danger.  Avalanches remain possible in wind deposited snow and could be large.  On Tuesday, remember the travel advice for Moderate hazard,  "Evaluate snow and terrain carefully; identify features of concern".  Below treeline, avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider will be unlikely.  Consider to use safe travel techniques like riding slopes one at a time, and be conscious of terrain traps that might increase the consequences of an otherwise small avalanche.

    It is too soon to discount the possibility of triggering a Wind Slab avalanche on North and East slopes that the wind blew snow onto.  With a meter or more of snow that fell during the last storm, these avalanches could easily be large enough to bury or injure a rider.  If you are riding near treeline or in the alpine, use low angle slopes to establish the extent of previous wind loading.  I use pole probing, hand shears, test slopes and even compression tests to evaluate how reactive old wind slabs might be.  When in doubt stick to lower angle slopes, or slopes that are more protected from the effects of the wind where the snow is probably better anyway!

Avalanche Discussion

Last weekend brought very heavy snowfall and the associated avalanche problems.  Those instabilities are beginning to settle out.  For the most part, the Storm Slab problem should be a thing of the past.  Wind Slabs typically take a little longer to adhere.  Cold temperatures on Monday night might allow them to stick around a little longer.  If we see enough clearing overnight, we may also see some faceting of the surface snow.  This would/will lead to shallow Loose Dry avalanches, although I anticipate any to be so shallow as to not be a true avalanche problem.
