Kernpunkte

You could trigger small avalanches on very steep slopes at upper elevations and where wind forms shallow drifts. Expect another light dusting of snow near the Cascade crest and increasing wind. Recent snow could slide easily on slick crusts.

    The wind will be the driving factor of avalanche danger on Saturday. Watch for wind-transported snow and small drifts pointing to leeward sides of ridges and terrain features.  You can avoid triggering wind slab avalanches by steering around drifted pillows of snow and staying off of leeward slopes. Other signs of the danger are cracks shooting through the snow and areas of deeper, stiffer snow that you can feel under your feet or with a prob. Check to see how the new snow is bonding to the recently buried crust with quick tests like hand shears, kick turn tests, and small test slopes. In wind-sheltered terrain, you may be able to trigger fast-moving loose dry avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

On Friday, observers reported 2" of new snow that adds to the  4-8" that accumulated at the beginning of the week. Observers also reported fast-running sluffs, up to D1.5 on Tatie Peak.  Leading up to the 12th, a crust formed by sun, warm temperatures, and then rain to almost 7,000ft. 

Between February 3 and 8th, almost 2 feet of snow accumulated near Washington Pass. Observers reported a number of large (up to size D3) avalanches in the zone during this time. Crowns were mostly in north through east-facing terrain, below cliff bands or in other wind-loaded terrain. One human-triggered slide near the Lyall Glacier stepped down to a recent interface and broke into a large avalanche on an east aspect at 6,400ft.  Observers near Harts Pass reported a couple of wide avalanches. One was about 2 ft deep and ran on older, faceted snow in the middle of the snowpack where it was relatively shallow (7ft) and weak.
