Continued warm temperatures above freezing during the day and overnight will destabilize the upper portion of the snowpack making wet slab avalanches possible. Monitor snow surfaces and steer clear of steep slopes (especially in rocky terrain) facing the sun if you encounter wet, slushy, and unsupportable snow. Cornice and rock falls will also be possible so limit exposure of these overhead hazards.

    Daytime temperatures over 40°F the last three days with above freezing temperatures the last two nights will make triggering 1-2 foot wet slab avalanches possible on W-S-E aspects. Numerous interfaces exist in the upper portion of the snowpack that will provide bed surfaces for wet slab avalanches. These wet slabs could also occur on wind loaded terrain where old wind slabs can destabilize and become reactive. The best way to manage this problem is to monitor sky weather, wind, and snow surfaces. Steer clear of slopes where you easily sink into wet, slushy snow. Steep slopes exposed to the sun around rock features will be most hazardous. 

    Wet Loose: Smaller point triggered avalanches will be possible across all elevations and most aspects with continued warm temperatures. Monitor snow surfaces as mentioned above. 

    Cornice Falls: Increased temperatures will also destabilize cornices. Give cornices a wide margin of safety and be careful along ridgelines as they can break further back than expected. Limit exposure under cornices where natural falls could occur. In addition, rock falls will be possible near cliffs and rocky terrain as the snow destabilizes and melts.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday wind and cloud cover kept snow surfaces cool providing a superficial refreeze on snow surfaces in some areas and less rapid warming of snow throughout the day. Sustained S/SE wind 15-25 mph continuing today will again help reduce snow surfaces from drastically warming. Terrain sheltered from the wind could destabilize and become reactive faster. Overcast cloud cover is forecasted to develop by the afternoon reducing solar influence. Expect avalanche danger and the possibility of wet slabs to increase if these clouds do not develop. Maximum temperatures of 40°F and higher are forecasted today across all elevations. Steep southeast slopes will warm first followed by south and then southwest. Low and middle elevation slopes will also warm earlier in the day. Adjust your travel plans accordingly. The key to managing the hazards today will be monitoring those snow surfaces and indentifying signs of warming such as recent roller balls or natural wet loose avalanches.

Wet slabs can be difficult to predict. Yesterday we saw water beginning to pool above crusts buried 10-14” below the surface, indicating that water is slowly moving down through the snowpack and destabilizing (see observation from adjacent zone here).  Manage this uncertainty by providing large safety margins and easy escape plans if snow is wet and slushy. Seek lower angle or cooler northerly aspects when you encounter warming snow surfaces. In addition, moderate to strong wind may have formed isolated wind slabs where preserved powder still exists on northerly aspects in the upper elevations and above 10,500’.
