Kernpunkte

Avalanche danger will increase throughout the day as increasingly strong winds redistribute the light dry surface snow.  Similarly, snowfall in the afternoon hours will increase both the size and likelihood of avalanches.  While I anticipate Moderate avalanche hazard for much of the day, the avalanche danger will reach Considerable by the late afternoon.  Dial back your terrain choices later in the day as things become more dangerous.

    By the later afternoon, Wind Slab avalanches will be likely.  On Monday I toured through 10 cm of beautiful, light, dry surface snow.  This snow is waiting for the winds to ramp up and blow it onto North and East facing start zones.  The nature of the light snow today may provide a perfect weak layer under harder wind packed snow on those slopes.  As heavy snowfall begins on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening, the size of avalanches will increase.

Avalanche Discussion

Most of us are probably very excited to finally be receiving some stormy winter weather!  Monday was a perfect calm before the snow with surprising shallow pow riding and mostly calm winds.  This light snow made for shallow Loose Dry avalanches and on slopes that were kissed by the sun, these sluffs were surprisingly powerful.  Our forecasters and observers have been looking for persistent weak layers in our snowpack, and have notably not been finding any (see video).  Lots of new snow from several systems during the next few days will give backcountry riders plenty to deal with.
