Avalanche Discussion

The main thing to look out for today are fresh wind slabs at upper elevations in Hyalite Canyon of the Northern Gallatin Range, Cooke City, or any other place that received more than a dusting of snow where the danger is MODERATE today at upper elevations. 

Yesterday while skiing in Hyalite, my partner and I found that the new snow would sluff easily, telling me that wind slabs formed overnight should be easy to trigger. These wind slabs and drifts should be easy to see today. Identify them and go around them.

There is a lingering persistent slab problem in the Southern Madison and Gallatin Ranges and the Lionhead area. These avalanches are unlikely but the remote chance of triggering one should cause you to adjust your terrain choices - (1) choose slopes with a clean runout free of terrain traps, and (2) make sure your partners are watching you from a safe location.

Most places that only got an inch of new snow have a LOW avalanche danger.
