Continue to use normal caution. If you trigger any avalanches, they would most likely be small, isolated wind-drifted pockets of snow in east and south-facing extreme steep terrain. Investigate and navigate around areas of concern.
Avalanche Discussion
The highest likelihood of encountering unstable snow comes from triggering a small, five day old pocket of wind drifted snow in sheltered areas. After several days of strong winds, these pockets may present as hard slabs. However, persistent arctic cold temperatures may leave them sensitive to a human trigger. These pockets are most likely to be found on east- and south-facing terrain above 3,000 feet in elevation. Take the time to dig into the snow to check for softer, less supportive layers beneath the firm surface. This may not pose a problem unless you're in a high consequence area where getting knocked off your feet turns into a slide-for-life into exposed rocks below.
The chances of measurable snow accumulation today are very remote. With exceptionally dry air, any snowfall will be low density and easily transported or scoured by the wind. As a result, this snow is unlikely to meaningfully contribute to the overall avalanche hazard.
The overall snowpack in the forecast area varies significantly by elevation and terrain. Below 3,000 feet, the snowpack lacks sufficient depth and continuity to serve as a viable bed surface for avalanches. While many of the ravines contain some connected and developed snow-covered slopes, overall snowpack depth remains below average for late January. Tuckerman Ravine stands out as having the most developed avalanche paths, with more substantial snow accumulation compared to other areas.
