You can still trigger an avalanche where the wind has deposited unstable drifts, below ridgelines and in gullies. Avalanches could break wider than you'd expect. Assess for stiff, textured snow that cracks beneath your feet, or stick to lower angle slopes to help you mitigate this hazard.

    While the recent winds have been generally light for Sierra standards, they have been sufficient for transporting the low density snow we received, creating unstable wind drifts on all aspects near and above treeline. Because slabs rest on a bed surface of either weak, sugary snow on shady aspects, or slick crusts on sunny slopes, they may be sensitive longer than you'd expect. Be prepared for these avalanches to break wider than expected as well. You may find sensitive wind slabs beneath ridgelines, in bowls and depressions, and in crossloaded gullies. Look for cracking and textured, stiff snow to clue you in to where the problem exists. Consider heightened consequences if caught in even a small avalanche as many shallowly buried obstacles exist, especially in steep, exposed terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Variable winds have been transporting low density snow, stiffening it into slabs on all aspects of the compass in exposed terrain. We haven't seen natural activity, but observes reported cracking and stiff snow on NW - N - NE aspects yesterday in the Mammoth Lakes area and in the June BC. Snowpack tests confirmed failures where the new snow meets the old snow.  Cohesive slabs could be up to 1.5 ft thick and may sit on top of well developed facets. This is a poor structure. Avalanches may break wider than expected and be sensitive for longer than usual. As temperatures rise and we see a full day of clear skies, new snow on solar slopes and at lower elevations may to begin to transition. This could lead to some rollerballs and even small, isolated loose snow instabilities. Watch for fans of snow coming down from above as the snow warms.While this new snow is very enticing to the backcountry enthusiast, remember our coverage is still generally thin, and many objects are only shallowly buried.
