It is unlikely that you'll trigger or witness an avalanche today. Anticipate widespread firm, icy snow surfaces on all aspects and elevations. Carry crampons and an ice axe if you'll be on steep slopes because a slip and fall may not be survivable.

Avalanche Discussion

Today, the region will enjoy a respite from the recent cold snap. With the freezing level expected to rise over the next couple of days, we anticipate some softening of snow surfaces. Over the past week, we've observed faceted snow crystals on and near the surface across the forecast area. There's a saying in the snow and avalanche world: "Today's snow surface is tomorrow's avalanche problem." As we approach an increasing likelihood of snowfall this weekend, we'll be monitoring how these weak, faceted snow crystals hold up under the weight of the new snow.

Non-Avalanche Related Hazards

Firm SurfacesThe greatest hazard to climbers and skiers is the abundance of icy surfaces across the forecast area. Even on small knolls, there is a risk of losing footing and taking an uncontrolled fall into trees, rocks, or ice. Caution must be exercised while traveling on steep slopes, especially above 8,000 feet. If you're heading into upper elevation terrain, bring a helmet, ice axe, and crampons.

Ice Fall & Rock FallRecent field reports continue to highlight the persistent danger of falling ice and rocks from the upper mountain. Rock bands such as the Red Banks, Casaval Ridge, Trinity Chutes, and Green Butte Ridge are shedding ice, releasing rocks ranging in size from marbles to softballs.

Winter Recreation Access

  • Everitt Memorial Highway: Open to Bunny Flat.
  • Castle Lake Road: Plowed to Methodist Camp, though the gate is closed near 4,200 feet. Bike and hike access is welcome beyond the gate.
  • Pilgrim Creek Snowmobile Park: Open; trails are groomed.
  • Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park: Open, but plowed past the warming hut to Pomeroy Creek due to logging.
