It is likely a human could trigger a dry or wet snow avalanche in the Summit area today and natural avalanches are possible. Strong winds in the upper elevations have formed fresh "pillows" of dense snow. Rain is falling on weak snow in the mid elevations making wet loose avalanches a concern. Avoid places with blowing snow and look for roller balls as a sign that wet loose avalanches could occur.

Glide cracks remain a concern and could release into large and dangerous avalanches. They are more difficult to see in these cloudy conditions, but look for that "brown frown" or wrinkly snow and avoid traveling below if possible.

    Our biggest concern in Summit is a slab avalanche that is likely for a human to trigger today due to the strong winds blowing snow into drifts and rain falling on a relatively dry snowpack. Both of these natural inputs of blowing snow and rain are adding stress to a few different buried weak layers within the snowpack. This problem can be completely avoided by sticking to slopes less than 30 degrees. 

    Wet Loose: Natural wet loose avalanches are possible and human triggered are likely today. Numerous natural wet loose avalanches were observed in Girdwood yesterday between 2,500' and 3,500'. Summit didn't receive nearly the rainfall totals that the coastal areas did, but the snowpack in Summit is generally more weak. It doesn't take as much water to cause a weak snowpack to fail. This problem exists below 3,000' where rain has fallen onto a relatively dry snowpack. Luckily, this problem is one of the easier ones to manage, but wet snow can be difficult to escape if too much of it builds up. Roller balls are a good sign that we could trigger a wet loose slide.

    A glide avalanche is the most dangerous of today's smorgasbord of problems. Sometimes rain and warm temperatures can increase glide avalanche activity, but sometimes nothing happens. That is one of the interesting and scary things about glides, they are completely unpredictable. The good thing is they are avoidable if we can see them, which may be difficult today. We know they are everywhere in Turnagain so the safest plan is to avoid terrain where we know they exist especially if visibility is limited due to clouds.
