Kernpunkte

A very large storm has arrived and will intensify throughout the day into this evening. With new snow totals increasing combined with high to extreme winds near and above treeline, large natural and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. Avoid traveling in, near, or below avalanche terrain.

    Although there is not much new snow on the ground this morning, this is a problem that will grow throughout the day. With the potential of 25 to 40 inches of new snow at treeline by tomorrow morning along with a firm surface crust that has formed over the last couple days, the snowpack is set up for widespread, well-connected new snow avalanches. This problem could be found wherever new snow has fallen.

    With winds reaching the extreme category, expect to see unusual wind loading above, near, and below treeline. This kind of strong wind can often result in wind slab development in suprisingly low and mid slope terrain, not commonly seen with moderate winds. Windward slopes will likely be scoured of all loose snow as this storm progresses. Leeward slopes will see rapid loading due to wind tranport. Combining this probem with the expected new snow totals could result in massive loading events on leeward slopes. Best bet is to stay clear of any windward slopes during this storm event.

Avalanche Discussion

Today is all about terrain management and having the correct mindset. The incoming wind and snow will drastically change the stability of our snowpack for the imminent future. Luckily, the hazards that will be growing throughout the day are manageable with good decision making. Dont underestimate the speed, and intensity of this storm. If choosing to go into the backcountry today, watch for wind loaded slopes and new snow accumulation. Stay off of slopes greater than 35 degrees, including terrain below. While in the backcountry, keep your eyes peeled for the 5 five red flags of snowpack instability:

  • Recent avalanches 
  • Cracking, collapsing, whumphing sounds
  • Strong winds and wind loading slopes
  • Heavy snowfall within the last 24 hours
  • Rapid temperature change
