Avalanche Activity

Low avalanche danger

Avalanche danger is low. Isolated danger zones are found on north-facing slopes. Ridgeline older drifts generated by southerly winds can be triggered as small-to-medium avalanches by large additional loading. In isolated cases, small wet loose-snow avalanches can trigger from rough and rocky terrain.

Snowpack Structure

There was a bit of fresh fallen snow in the southern Niedere Tauern over Graz mountains as far as the Wechsel (5 cm, not avalanche relevant). The snow was deposited atop a melt-freeze crust. Older drifts are evident above 2200 m, particularly on extremely steep slopes in northern aspects, where there are soft layers deeply embedded inside the snowpack which are potential weak layers. At ground level the snowpack is moist-to-wet.

Weather Synopsis

Following a regionally sunny start into the day, clouds will swiftly move in, the higher peaks will disappear in fog. Sunshine will be rare during the daytime. Snow or rain is possible in some cases. The snowfall level will ascend to o er 1500 m. Strong SW winds will make temperatures rise. At 2000 m: -5 degrees and +2 degrees in the evening.

Tendency

On Thursday, brisk-to-stormy SW/NW winds. Variably sunny intervals amid dense clouds and brief showers. The further north you go, the more unpleasant is the mountain weather.
