Avalanche Activity

SC for 6.3. Unstable windslab developing mostly E to S aspects above 900m. Crossloading elsewhere. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will progressively develop mostly on East to South aspects above 900 metres. Areas most affected will be steep wind sheltered locations, particularly where accumulations gain depth, such as coire rims and gully tops. Other aspects will be subject to crossloading. Outwith these areas the old snowpack will be generally stable, but firm and icy in wind exposed locations. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Showers are expected throughout the forecast period, initially falling as snow above 600 metres, but reaching all elevations by dawn. The north-east of our area is expected to see showers of greater frequency. Winds will gradually increase in strength to become strong by dawn, mainly North-North-Westerly. The freezing level will be around 600 metres overnight, lowering to 250 metres during daylight hours. Observed Weather Influences: A day of snow showers, resulting in a superficial dusting above 700 metres. Winds were light and from the North-North-West. The freezing level was around 800 metres, lowering in showers. ObservedSnowStability: A superficial dusting of snow covers most aspects above 700 metres. Isolated and avoidable deposits containing weaknesses exist in wind sheltered locations on East to South aspects above 900 metres. Elsewhere the older snowpack is stable and very firm, despite a cosmetic covering of new snow. The avalanche hazard is Low.
