The combination of wind and new snow is building wind slabs in exposed, upper elevation terrain. These slabs will grow in size and distribution throughout the day and will become more sensitive to your weight as they do. In the past few days, skiers triggered wind slabs in the Boulders (photo here) and the Sawtooths (video at right/above). Both of these avalanches occurred before more snow started to fall yesterday.
You're most likely to find a reactive slab in alpine, upper elevation terrain where more snow falls and winds are most intense. Be on the lookout for these slabs near features that slow the wind down and force it to drop the load it is carrying. Use snow surface textures (like ripples and dune-like drifts) to help you identify these areas from a distance. If you are traveling through a wind slab, expect the snow to be a bit thicker and denser than snow that is unaffected by the wind. Cracks shooting out from your skis, board, or machine are a great sign that you've found a sensitive wind slab.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSIONWeak layers of snow exist in the upper 1-2 feet of the snowpack. Alternating periods of sun and snow earlier this month built and buried layers of crusts and facets. On Saturday, skiers in the Owl Creek drainage triggered an avalanche that failed on this weak snow on a north-facing slope at 8,300'. Yesterday, riders near the headwaters of the Salmon River triggered a similar slide on a north-facing slope at 9,400' Triggering one of these slides is more likely in wind-loaded terrain, but is possible in sheltered terrain as well.
