The wind slabs are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and generally at high altitudes. The wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases in particular on north to northeast to east facing aspects, especially on very steep slopes especially above approximately 2800 m at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. In very isolated cases avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers.

As a consequence of falling temperatures the snowpack consolidated. The conditions below approximately 2400 m are spring-like. Towards its surface, the snowpack is very homogeneous and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. The high humditiy will give rise in the early morning to moistening of the snowpack. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects less snow than usual is lying. In high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
