You can trigger a large and destructive avalanche where cohesive slabs of snow rest over deeply buried weak layers. The most dangerous slopes face northwest through north to southeast. Avalanches can be triggered remotely from adjacent slopes and from below. You may not see cracking or hear collapsing before an avalanche breaks. You can increase your safety by sticking to terrain less than about 30 degrees, but plan your routes and safe zones carefully to avoid traveling under steep suspect slopes.
