Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures the snowpack consolidated. Below approximately 2800 m: The snowpack is fairly homogeneous and its surface has a melt-freeze crust. This applies in particular in the early morning. Above approximately 3300 m, shady slopes: The snowpack is dry and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a crust that is strong in many cases. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. Below approximately 2300 m only a little snow is lying on south facing slopes.

Avalanche Activity

The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase during the day.

The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust will soften earlier than the day before. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the avalanche danger. Wet snow slides and avalanches are possible, even medium-sized ones. This applies in particular on very steep sunny slopes at intermediate and high altitudes, and in steep rocky terrain. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls. Backcountry tours should be started and concluded early.
