Avalanche Activity

Increase in danger of dry avalanches as a consequence of new snow and wind.

As a consequence of sharply falling temperatures, snowfall and the occasionally storm force northwesterly wind, a treacherous avalanche situation will develop. Wednesday: The prevalence of avalanche prone locations and likelihood of triggering will increase during the course of the night. These conditions will bring about a rise in the danger of dry avalanches. Also at a distance from ridgelines occasionally large dry slab avalanches are possible. Along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. Especially wind-loaded slopes: The fresh snow as well as all the wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. Backcountry touring calls for caution and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 30 cm of snow, and up to 50 cm in some localities, will fall until the evening in all altitude zones. Especially in the northern areas bordering France and Switzerland. Towards its surface, the snowpack is soft and has a loosely bonded surface. The wind will transport the snow. The fresh wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Especially adjacent to ridgelines in all aspects: Over a wide area snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

The weather will be cold. The avalanche danger will persist.
