Avalanche Activity

Weakly bonded old snow represents the main danger.

Avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1800 m. Avalanches are medium-sized. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger. In the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable) the avalanche danger is higher.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen. Some snow will fall. The new snow is lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1800 m. Distinct weak layers exist in the old snowpack.

Tendency

The weather conditions will facilitate a very slow stabilisation of the snowpack.
