Snowpack

In the north, the foehn wind transported some loose snow on north-facing slopes during the night to Saturday. Mostly thin, hard snowdrift accumulations developed locally. In addition, in the west and north, isolated avalanches may still be triggered in older, near-surface layers of the snowpack.

In southern Valais, Grisons and Ticino, there are also weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack where avalanches may still be triggered. These avalanche prone locations are quite rare, but a little more prevalent in the Engadine.

The warmer temperatures have led to an increase in gliding avalanches, including large ones mainly in the west.

Weather forecast to Sunday

It will be very cloudy. In the west and north, a little snow will fall above 1600 m. In the afternoon, it will be quite sunny on the Main Alpine Ridge in Valais and in Ticino.

• Extreme west of Lower Valais: 5 to 10 cm.
• Vaud Alps and Prealps: up to 5 cm; otherwise dry

Outlook

On Monday morning, it will still be quite sunny in the south and east. Otherwise it will be very cloudy on both days. On Tuesday, there will be a little widespread snowfall above 1500 m, most of it in the far west and the south with up to 10 cm. There will be a light to moderate southwesterly wind on both days.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease on Monday. On Tuesday it may increase slightly in the far west, otherwise it will not change significantly. There will continue to be a possibility of gliding avalanches.
