Kernpunkte

New snow and West winds have formed soft surface slabs in the backcountry. These slabs will be most sensitive at high elevations where skiers or riders could easily trigger them to depths of two feet on steep leeward slopes. At the mid elevations pockets to a foot could be triggered and avalanches are unlikely at low elevations where little new snow was received.

Avalanche Discussion

Light snow that is to fall overnight is to taper to occasional mountain snow showers on Thursday. Mountain temperatures are to raise to near twenty degrees in the early afternoon before West winds become Northwesterly and increase to averages of 25-30mph. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate. In steep wind loaded terrain at the upper elevations, skiers or riders will have the potential to trigger loose sluffs or pockets of surface slab to two feet in depth. Check the morning forecast as increased snowfall amounts or strong winds could quickly raise the hazard to Considerable. In isolated areas, weak layers persist at the base of the snowpack. Avalanches involving this layer are thought to only be possible in the Southwest Trails and the Togwotee Areas. Triggering such a slide is likely to require a large trigger.
