Avalanche Activity

Wet and gliding snow represent the main danger. Wind slabs at high altitude.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the high Alpine regions, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality. A clear night will be followed in the early morning by favourable conditions generally, but the danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase later. The meteorological conditions will foster a gradual weakening of the snowpack in the afternoon in all aspects. In the regions with a lot of snow medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist and wet avalanches are possible. This applies in particular in the regions with a lot of snow along the border with France. Backcountry tours should be started very early and concluded timely.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 15 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Tuesday above approximately 2600 m. Up to 2600 m rain has fallen in some localities. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good over a wide area. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften during the day. The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing softening of the snowpack. Above approximately 2200 m a lot of snow is lying for the time of year.
