Avalanche Activity

The new snow and wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence especially on northwest to north to southeast facing aspects above approximately 2200 m. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack serve as an alarm indicating the danger. In particular slopes adjacent to ridgelines are especially precarious. These places are quite prevalent but are easy to recognise. As a consequence of warming more frequent small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are possible below approximately 2000 m.

Snowpack Structure

Snow depths vary greatly at intermediate and high altitudes, depending on the infuence of the wind. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes at intermediate and high altitudes. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack especially on shady slopes.
