You can trigger an avalanche on many wind-drifted slopes at all elevations. A powerful storm delivered over a foot of heavy, dense snow with strong winds. Expect variability in bonding of the new snow and the possibility of terrain-feature-specific weak layers created during the storm. Below treeline, the snowpack was very weak pre-storm, so avalanches can gouge into deeper weak layers and propagate unusually for below treeline. Avoiding wind-drifted slopes is a good way to reduce your hazard, or, if the picture is complex, step back to slopes less than 30 degrees.
