Fresh wind-drifted snow forming on north to east to southeast-facing slopes will increase your chances of triggering an avalanche. Slabs might break in the new snow or deeper on buried weak layers, creating a much larger slide. Watch for signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing, and be aware that you could trigger an avalanche from a distance away as the surface snow stiffens. Wind-sheltered, lower-elevation slopes are a safer option.
