Avalanche Activity

GC for 10/2. Wet snow instabilities early am NE,E,SE above 900m. Consolidation later. Good stability elsewhere. Moderate Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: In the early morning wet snow instabilities will form in recent windslab deposits. Areas most affected will be steep summit slopes and gullies with a North-East to South-East aspect above 900 metres. Stability will improve as the snowpack consolidates through the day. Elsewhere the older snowpack will remain well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Showers will turn to rain at all levels by early morning becoming heavier during the day. Strong South-Westerly winds overnight will increase and veer West-South-Westerly during the day. The freezing level will be around 800 metres overnight rising above all summits by dawn. Observed Weather Influences: A day of snow showers and gale force Westerly winds. The freezing level rose to around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The existing older snowpack is well bonded, firm and stable. Localised deposits of fresh unstable windslab are developing on steep North-East to South East aspects above 900 metres. These deposits are generally shallow and confined to wind sheltered areas such as gullies and steep slope tops. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
