Kernpunkte

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. In particular at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. At low and intermediate altitudes the avalanche danger is one level lower.

Snowpack Structure

15 to 25 cm of snow, but less in some localities, has fallen since Tuesday above approximately 2400 m. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be good. The sometimes strong wind has transported some snow. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The new snow is lying on a crust on sunny slopes. This snow is lying on soft layers in all aspects above approximately 2800 m. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2500 m.

Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. In particular at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. At low and intermediate altitudes the avalanche danger is one level lower.

The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. In some places sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed, especially along the border with Switzerland. The fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. Avalanches can be released in near-surface layers, even by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls, and on very steep slopes. On very steep slopes dry loose snow avalanches are possible, but they will be mostly small. In addition individual small and medium-sized dry slab avalanches are possible. The meteorological conditions will cause a slight rise in the danger of moist avalanches as the day progresses on very steep slopes. In the event of solar radiation this applies at low and intermediate altitudes.
