Dangerous avalanche conditions exist at upper elevations. You will likely trigger an avalanche up to 2 feet deep on steep, wind-affected slopes. Avalanches are possible in sheltered middle and upper elevation terrain. New snow and wind, combined with rising temperatures, will continue to build slabs and create upside-down conditions throughout the day. Choose lower-angle slopes when you find drifting snow or shooting cracks.

It remains possible to trigger a hard slab avalanche that breaks 2 to 4 feet deep. Very steep, shaded terrain above 8,000 feet is most suspect. Evaluate steep slopes carefully where weak snow remains buried.

    Up to 15+” of snow has fallen at upper elevations in the last 48 hours. Westerly winds have been strong with gusts to 100 mph in places. Several more inches of snow is forecast to fall today with continued wind. Expect to find sensitive wind slabs up to 2 feet thick in exposed terrain along ridge lines, rocky outcrops, and in cross-loaded gullies. In isolated areas, slabs could be thicker. Look for drifting snow and shooting cracks. Loose snow avalanches are possible in steep, sheltered terrain and could entrain large amounts of snow.

    Slabs have developed into the middle elevations. In more sheltered areas with less wind-affected snow, storm slabs are possible. Warming temperatures, wind, and settlement will contribute to slab development and upside-down conditions throughout the day. Monitor storm snow totals, watch for shooting cracks, jump on small test slopes, and dial back your slope angles when appropriate.

    A very small windslab that was easy to trigger on a loaded ridge line yesterday (3/11). New snow and wind have contributed to larger more reactive slabs today.

    Weak snow formed in January is buried 2 to 4 feet deep below a hard slab. While this weak layer has been slowly healing and becoming harder to trigger, there is still a possibility of impacting this weak layer as it continues to be loaded. Weak snow is mostly preserved above 8,000 feet on shady aspects. Very steep slopes over 35° are most concerning, particularly in the southern and western areas of the Teton forecast zone. Identify and evaluate steep shady slopes carefully.

    A large avalanche south of JHMR that failed on weak snow in the middle of the snowpack. The avalanche was likely triggered by a piece of falling cornice. Most recent persistent slab avalanche events have occurred on the west and south side of the Tetons.

Avalanche Discussion

Multiple avalanche problems are possible today. Wind slabs remain number one on the radar. Reports of large amounts (over 2.5 feet)  of new snow above 10,000 feet in the Park were reported yesterday, where natural avalanches are possible. With very strong westerly winds, thick wind slabs have formed and could be easily triggered by the weight of a single rider. In lower elevations or more protected areas, storm slab formation is possible as rising temperatures, new snow, and settlement will contribute to unstable snow. Large amounts of sluffing could also be possible in steep terrain. To top it off, you might get rained on as you exit the mountains. Today is a good day to dial back your slope angles if you see any red flags like recent avalanches or heavy drifting and high storm snow totals.
