Kernpunkte

It is growing increasingly difficult to imagine an avalanche on buried weak layers from February.  Nonetheless, they continue to be worth considering given the large size of any resulting avalanche.  We have found these weak layers on cold, sheltered slopes.  I've continued to exercise a margin of safety when it comes to steep, unsupported slopes that face north.

    These avalanches are unlikely but would be large.  The two problematic weak layers are: a layer of surface hoar (Feb 14) that is buried 50 cm. and a layer of rounding facets (Feb 8) that is buried 75 cm.  The surface hoar in particular is very isolated in the terrain.  Forecasters were mostly finding it on cold, north slopes around 7000 ft.  The faceted layer exists on most north slopes but appears to be gaining strength (rounding).  I would expect this avalanche problem to disappear from the forecast shortly, but it is worth remembering for now, especially in a few days as temperatures begin to climb.

Avalanche Discussion

It was cold and crusty in the monument this morning with fresh rime ice in the trees up high.  By late morning the sun was poking out, and sunny slopes were softening by midday.  While there is still over 4 feet of snow on the summit plateau, the lower elevations are melting out quickly.  South facing slopes are becoming bare again.  Access to trail 11 is barely hanging in there.  If you enjoy the winter season out at Paulina, get out there soon!
