New snow and wind have created dangerous avalanche conditions. You are most likely to find and trigger a slab in steep terrain, particularly in areas affected by wind. Triggering a dangerous slab is also possible below 9,000'.  Continue to evaluate the snow for signs of instability or slab development in the recent snow and probe or dig to look for deeper weak layers.

    Storm slabs are more likely to be found and triggered further north in this forecast zone. You'll find the greatest snowfall totals from the past several days in the Snake River, northern Wyoming and Gros Ventre ranges. The new snow can break on mid-storm layers or deeper on a crust from the last warm spell. These crusts also have some facets around them, forming a potential point of failure and sliding surface for avalanches. Check out this observation as a good example of this problem. These crusts exist on all aspects up to 9,000'.  The lower elevation snowpack is thin in most areas making avalanches less likely except in isolated areas.

    You may find wind slabs in some locations today as well, most likely on W-N-E aspects. Slabs will be on the smaller side but could entrain enough snow to be dangerous.   Look for cross-loading where wind funnels through passes and across gullies and signs of drifting on or below ridgetops or beneath cliffs.

    This avalanche was 2' thick,  occured on a 30 degree slope and was triggered from a distance on Feb 7 in the Snake River Range. NE aspect, 8800'.

    A weak snow layer formed in December exists 3-5 feet down, generally on shady aspects at mid and upper elevations. Triggering an avalanche on this layer has become much less likely over time but increased loading from the recent storm cycle could make this layer more sensitive to triggering.  You are most likely to trigger this type of avalanche in areas like steep convexities, rocky slopes, and wind affected terrain where the layer is closer to the surface. Recent snow that  has formed a slab on the many slide paths that avalanched on this layer in mid-January could slide again. Signs of instability like whumpfing are mostly absent and tracks on a slope are not conclusive evidence that it is safe. Use cautious route-finding and don't linger beneath steep overhead slopes.

     

     

     

     

Avalanche Discussion

The snowpack is highly variable across elevations as well as south to north. The southern part of this zone has received less new snow over the past few days so you're likely to be dealing primarily with wind slabs and the persistent weak layer depending on your elevation. The December drought layer is now shown in the forecast as a deep slab problem due to it's increasing stubborness and depth below the surface. This zone has received up to 3" of water in the past week. The weight of that water may push the layer towards being reactive to the weight of a person and a snowmachine.
