Happy New Year! Generally, safe avalanche conditions exist. We have some uncertainty at upper elevations where you may be able to trigger an insolated small avalanche in wind-drifted snow. Still, low coverage and obstacles will likely be the most prominent hazard.

We will have a mild start to 2024 with a familiar pattern of valley fog, east flow, and sunny skies at upper elevations. Above the clouds, steep southern aspects may shed a few rollerballs, but we don't expect wet loose avalanches to become a significant problem.
Observers from neighboring zones like East Central reported lingering instabilities in wind-drifted snow. Observations are very limited in East South. However, we expect recently formed wind slabs to be stubborn and more difficult to trigger since the zone experienced less precipitation and slightly warmer temperatures. Still, we have uncertainty at upper elevations, so ease into alpine terrain slowly with an assessment mindset. Identify wind slab locations using visual clues like textured surfaces and pillow-like drifts. You can use quick hand pits or small test slopes to see how the snow reacts. If slabs of snow slide easily in these tests, avalanches are more likely.
A common saying is that "low danger doesn't mean no danger." So, continue to practice safe travel techniques such as exposing only one person on a slope at a time, carrying avalanche rescue gear, and making snowpack observations as you travel to gain more information. Shooting cracks or audible whumphs are bullseye signs of unstable snow. Hard over soft layering, actively blowing snow, or hollow-sounding drifts also indicate avalanches are possible. You don't need a large avalanche to ruin your day. Even a small avalanche can have dire consequences in the wrong terrain - especially during early season conditions like we have right now.
Early season conditions still exist across much of the zone. Look for hidden hazards such as downed trees, stumps, creeks, and rocks.
