Kernpunkte

Hazard is at moderate for only the uppermost elevations of Douglas. Storm slab and wet loose avalnche hazard should be decreasing a little today as precipitation tapered off overnight. Upper elevation start zones could still have a touchy a storm slab, and wet loose activity remains possible at all elevations as temperatures rise throughout the day. Wet loose avalnches are typically slow moving but tend to entrain a lot of snow and run farther than expected, if you are not paying attention and get caught they can be hard to get out of and are capable of carrying you into terrain traps.

Storm slab continues to build but only at the very highest elevations of Douglas Island as temperatures have risen and the snow line crept up. This new snow is likely bonded well but will probably be showing more signs of wet loose as temperatures continue to rise during the daylight hours.

Precipitation decreased overnight, and today is is expected to be somewhat of a drier day so wet loose activity may be less than yesterday but is still possible at all elevations on Douglas Island.

Avalanche Discussion

Similar conditions to yesterday except precipitation has tapered off and a drier day today is expected. This should give the storm slab, which is now just at the very top, some time to settle and for water to drain out of the snowpack. Hazard will likely be decreasing throughout the day but wet loose activity is still possible.  Large, unsupported, upper elevation, steep slopes are going to be the most likely areas to trigger a storm slab avalanche. It is also the time of year to give cornices a wide berth as daytime temperatures continue to rise. Continue to practice good travel etiquette, ride, ski, sled one at a time, and avoid terrain traps. Remember that while slow wet loose avalanches are usually easy to avoid, if you are caught they can carry you long distances and pile up deeply in gullies and terrain traps, be aware of what is coming down behind you especially in confined runs like colouirs or chutes.
