Kernpunkte

Avalanche danger has decelerated at the lower elevations due to a reprieve in wind activity. Wind deposits on steep southeast slopes in alpine terrain may still be found reactive with the right trigger. Continue to treat consequential zones near treeline with caution. Terrain management will be the most useful tool for safe travels and riding today.

Northwest winds have taken a step back and remain most pronounced at the uppermost elevations. Southerly winds blowing near and below treeline may find some snow to drift before ramping up in activity tomorrow. Features that encourage drifting such as, outcropped alpine panels, ridgelines, cross-loaded depressions and chutes, are areas most suitable for the wind to drift snow. Staying wary of the snow texture will indicate whether the wind has impacted an area.

It's unlikely this problem will gain much speed today due to limited time and exposure. Nevertheless, the sun can still impact slopes through thin clouds and other slopes radiating heat will contribute. Best to stay mindful on sun exposed terrain that is rewarming and becoming weak and damp. Move aspects or find shady locations if you find yourself in wet snow above the boot cuff.

Avalanche Discussion

Winter conditions still exist in the backcountry with tons (30 feet worth) of snow near treeline in some places. These venues may foster different or unique conditions compared to other areas. Self stability tests are key and encouraged if traveling in remote zones presenting real winter conditions.
