Stable avalanche conditions exist across the forecast area. In the next 24 hours, a drastic cooling trend combined with strengthening N-NE wind will further firm up the snowpack, and create difficult mountain travel. If headed into the backcountry, expect cold temperatures and widespread, variable icy surfaces. Climbers and skiers, extreme caution must be taken on firm slopes due to slide-for-life conditions. 

Avalanche Discussion

Recent Public Observations:

  • A team of two gave a good effort at climbing Avalanche Gulch, reaching a high point of Thumb Rock (~12,800 feet). As expected, the team encountered very firm surfaces for the entirety of the route, providing good climbing but dangerous fall potential. Small (fist-sized) icefall and rockfall was frequent off of Casaval Ridge and the Red Banks. The team turned around at Thumb Rock due to the severe icy surfaces ahead.
  • A local skier found softening snow and great skiing below 8,500 feet in Sun Bowl. The softening was specific to solar aspects, with shaded areas staying firm.

Today will bring a slight change in weather, with building clouds, cooling temperatures, and strengthening wind. Unfortunately, no precipitation is expected, and snow surfaces will likely worsen over the weekend.

Climbing Conditions: Good for experienced climbers, but slide-for-life potential is extreme. This weekend, with the expected cold temperatures and strengthening wind, climbing will become particularly challenging and dangerous. For more information, read the climbing advisory HERE. 

Access: Everitt Memorial Highway is open to Bunny Flat / Castle Lake road is closed and gate shut, but plowed to Methodist Camp; bike access possible / Pilgrim Creek Snowmobile Park is open, trails groomed / Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park is open, but plowed past warming hut to Pomeroy Creek due to logging.
