Kernpunkte

Human-triggered avalanches are unlikely in most areas today. Continue to look out for unstable snow in isolated, wind-affected areas in very steep, rocky terrain. Low danger doesn’t mean no danger so continue to practice safe travel techniques.

Avalanche Discussion

It has been eleven days since the last snowfall in western Wyoming. The snowpack continues to slowly settle, while surface hoar and near-surface facets persist on shaded, sheltered slopes. Three days ago, a party in Death Canyon triggered a small wind slab in very steep, rocky terrain. Avalanches like this fit well within a Low danger rating—isolated, terrain-specific, and generally avoidable.

It remains possible to find a stubborn pocket in cold, shaded terrain. This is the type of avalanche to keep in mind while enjoying bluebird days, especially given variable and often challenging surface conditions. Deeper weak layers are currently well out of reach beneath a strong snowpack and can be considered dormant. It is highly unlikely these layers will become an issue in the near term.
