The avalanche danger is Moderate today. Yesterday there were multiple reports of skier and snowboarder triggered avalanches in the Palisades and Wyoming ranges. No one was caught or buried in these avalanches according to reports. Please visit the Avalanche Event Map on this website for more detailed info. Recently formed wind slabs ran on crusts that formed in early March and also stepped down to more deeply buried weak layers. Expect more of the same today, as warm temps and sunshine will make triggering avalanches more likely. Shallow wet loose avalanche activity is also possible in steep sunlit terrain. Approach terrain cautiously and be on the lookout for recent avalanches, shooting cracks and whoompfing. These are clear indicators that the snowpack in unstable and an alternative route is necessary to avoid involvement in avalanches.

    Weak layers that formed during an extended dry spell in January and February had been dormant until recently. Since March 8th, 20-25” of new snow fell in some parts of the forecast area. This snow combined with strong west and southwest winds helped to form slabs on stout crusts. Yesterday’s activity showed slabs running on these crusts but also stepping down to weak faceted layers deeper in the snowpack. Expect slab depths in the 1-2 foot range and be destructive enough to injure and bury riders.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Skies will remain partly cloudy overnight. Ridgetop temperatures will only dip slightly, into the high teens, before climbing into the high twenties to low thirties tomorrow. Overall temperatures will be five degrees warmer than today. Winds will be out of the west at 15 mph overnight and back to the southwest at 20-25 mph during the day tomorrow. Wind speeds will increase ahead of the next system. Clouds will be on the increase throughout the day and snow showers will develop later in the day. Daytime accumulations will be in the trace to 2” range across all three forecast areas.The snowpack in the Southwest Trails forecast area has shown to be the most active in the past 12 hours. In that area the danger will be Moderate where it will continue to remain possible to trigger avalanches 1-2 feet deep. In the Tetons and on Togwotee the possibility will remain for lingering wind slabs to be reactive in very steep terrain but be much smaller in size and distribution. Warm temperatures and sunshine will increase the likelihood of triggering avalanches tomorrow. That likelihood will begin to go down as cloud cover increases and the temperatures drop.
