Kernpunkte

A strong winter storm with heavy snow started last night and is expected to continue through today.  High snowfall rates are forecasted this morning with continued gale force winds.  Large avalanches could occur today.  Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.

    Gale force SW winds with gusts over 100mph on exposed ridges and peaks will continue today.  Large, thick wind slabs have formed and will continue to build in near treeline and above treeline areas.  Some wind slabs could also form in below treeline areas with the intense winds.  Wind slab avalanches are expected to be large in size and could release naturally.  Large cornices above slopes could collapse and cause these wind slab avalanches to fail.  These wind slab avalanches could run long distances into below treeline terrain.  Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended today.

    Warm temperatures yesterday afternoon and overnight with rain up to at least 6500-7000' has caused wet loose avalanches to occur at the lower elevations.  As snow levels have dropped early this morning, the wet loose activity has diminished and a storm slab problem has taken its place.  Storm slabs have formed at higher elevations and continue to build at lower elevations.  High intensity snowfall this morning may accumulate faster than the new snow can bond together.  Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended today.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Intense blowing snow was reported along ridgelines across the forecast area yesterday.  Building wind slabs were reactive in multiple locations.
  • "Punchy," upside-down conditions have been reported around the forecast area at all elevations on sheltered and exposed terrain. While this has made travel trickier, no signs of instability have been reported associated with this slightly upside-down layering.
  • Recent winds have scoured away snow on exposed windward slopes exposing a firm icy rain crust, especially below 9000'.
