Mount Shasta

Triggering an avalanche is unlikely today. However, there's still a chance of a small area of unstable snow in isolated, and steep terrain. A cooling trend over the next 24 hours will firm up snow surfaces. General caution is advised for backcountry travelers.

Today will bring a few changes to the recent sunny skies. As a storm system swings north of us, we won't be receiving any precipitation, but we will be getting the wind, cloud cover and slight cooling temperatures. These weather changes will have little impact on avalanche danger, but it could make mountain travel less fun and more challenging. If you're heading into the backcountry, prepare for crusty, and firm snow surfaces. Soft snow still exists out there, but it's becoming more and more challenging to find.

While continuing to wait for a fresh round of snow, come freshen up your avalanche skills at MSAC's two free events this weekend:

• Know Before You Go Avalanche Awareness at Thrive in Mount Shasta City. Tonight at 7pm. Come enjoy a free 1-hr avalanche awareness presentation to get you in the mindset and talk with other stoked locals!
• Companion Rescue Transceiver Clinic at the Sisson Ball field in Mount Shasta City. Tomorrow morning at 9am. This is another free opportunity to work alongside MSAC staff, practicing the steps to perform an avalanche rescue. Don't have your own transceiver, shovel, and probe? No problem, we have you covered!
