    Wind slabs could be found today at upper elevations where low-density snow from our most recent storm has drifted into leeward terrain features. Last night, ridgetop winds switched to the southwest and increased so there is potential for some blowing snow and new wind slab accumulation today.  Snow plumes over ridges and blowing snow on the snow surface are indications that wind slabs may be building in your area. Be on the lookout for fresh cohesive wind-deposited snow. Shooting cracks or hollow-sounding snow are good indications that the problem exists in the terrain around you. Reassess surface conditions as you encounter terrain features that block or re-direct wind and use extra caution when transitioning to steep or extreme terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Forecaster confidence increased with a good round of observations yesterday. The most recent snow is still not forming a cohesive layer, and very little wind slab formation has occurred since our last snowfall.

Uncertainty today surrounds the strength of southwest winds. The summit winds at Mammoth Mountain are in the strong range as of this morning and should hold steady through the day. We could see fresh wind slabs develop in leeward start zones that sit in front of large fetches of low-density near-treeline snow.

Partly cloudy skies and increasing winds will cool the snow surface on southerly aspects and have made wet snow instability less concerning. While isolated, the potential remains for small loose dry avalanches (sluffs) in very steep terrain at lower elevations. The surface snow is deepest (20cm) and least cohesive on steep north-facing terrain near and below treeline.
